Egyptian Bazaar (Spice Market)

Egyptian Bazaar which locates next to Yeni Camii (Mosque) was built one year after the end of completing the mosque. Its architect is Mustafa Aga. However when it was first opened, it had started to be called as Valide Carsısı, Yeni Carsı. Firstly it was allocated to herbalists (odor sellers) cotton merchants.

Spice center of Ottoman Empire

Later it became the city’s food warehouse and later became a bazaar where healing herbs were sold. Not only spice but also medicine was sold here. Egg, lamp or fringe were put in visible part  of stores for providing the customers notice the shop easier.

Pandeli which is one of the oldest restaurants of Istanbul locates in upper floor of Galata Bridge entrance of bazaar. Herbalists(spice) shops were rapidly decreased in bazaar in 70s. Jewelry, cheese, cloth, carpet, butcher, dried and nut fruit, souvenir shops were opened instead of those.
