Sabanci University’s Sakip Sabanci Museum houses an impressive collection of Turkish and Ottoman painting, calligraphy and artifacts. It is located within a beautiful historic mansion on the Bosphorus. İts extended property called Sahilhane. It was bought by Hacı Ömer Sabancı, later he brought a large bronze horse statue. Thus giving it the name of ‘Mansion with Horse’.

Following the death of Haci Omer Sabanci in 1966, Sakip Sabanci grew a collection of paintings and calligraphy. Sakıp Sabancı started collecting primarily calligraphic works and illuminated Korans in the 1970s.

The Mansion with Horse, with its impressive collection and furnishings, was donated to Sabanci University in 1998 in order to be transformed into a museum. The Museum was opened in 2002 and houses an extensive permanent collections.

Sabancı Museum Collection of the Arts of the Book and Calligraphy consists of illuminated Korans, prayer books, albums and panels written by well-known calligraphers, illuminated official documents bearing the imperial cipher of the Ottoman sultans as well as calligrapher’s tools, all produced during a period extending from the end of the 14th century to the 20th century.

On the enterance floor there are three rooms of furnishing used by Sabanci family, as well as 18th and 19 th century works of art collected by family and preserved in their original location.
