Eyup el-Ensari was companion of the Prophet Mohammed. It is believed that he has been martyered during the siege of Istanbul by Umayyad in 7 th century. After the conquest of Istanbul, the site was revealed to Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror’s teacher, Akşemseddin, in a dream. Sultan Mehmed II had a mausoleum on the site. Than went on build a mosque, a soup kitchen, a hamam.
Rebuilt by Sultan Selim III
The first building was damaged en the earhtquake of 18th century. And Sultan Selim III rebuild it. The current mosque has different features compared to the original. The main dome of the mosque, built from limestone blocks, measures 18 meters in diameter.
The mosque’s decorations are of an Ottoman Baroque style. There are small fountains, which are known as destiny fountains, located in the middle of the inner court. The mosque has two minarets, each with two balconies.
The Mousoleum covered with tiles
The most distinctive aspect of the complex is the mousoleum. It is octagonal in shape and has a single dome. The inner and outer walls are covered with Kütahya tiles. The medresse and the soup kitchen are no longer standing.
