The New Mosque was the last mosque of the great mosques by Ottoman Sultans. The building of The New Mosque had been started on behalf of Safiye Sultan, a wife of Sultan Murad III in 1597, and after the construction was stopped, it was restarted to be built by Valide Tarhan Sultan, mother of Mehmet IV. The Mosque was opened to the public in 1663.
Mosque was abandoned for its fate almost 57 years
There architect worked separately on the building. When the construction started, there was a major problem. Wherever they dug, water poured out. They worked to empty water with pumps. In the middle of construction Sultan Mehmet III died and the Mother of the Sultan was sent to the Palace. Mosque was abandoned for its fate almost 57 years.
Finished by order of Hatice Turhan Sultan
The mosque finished by order of Hatice Turhan Sultan in 1663. It uses the domed plan Mimar Sinan’s Şehzade Mosque. The fountain in the courtyard is one of the jewel of Turkish art.
Around a central dome, the ceiling of the New Mosque is surrounded by four half-domes that have the same diameter and are covered by many large and smaller mixed domes together. The main dome of the mosque rests on four elephant feet. The mosque has two minarets with each having three-balconies.
Hünkar Kasri is beatifull example of architecture
The New Mosque’s Hünkar Kasri is beatiful example of 17th century Turkish architecture. It has has the most beautiful view of mosque. The tiles are from İznik and some specially ornamented fort his mosque.
